What is “Clean Beauty” and Why Women Need to Use It

What is “Clean Beauty”

Have you ever wondered about the products you slather on your skin everyday? The ingredients you are putting on your body? It's not just about what you put IN your body, but also about what you put ON your body. You skin if your largest organ and guess what? It absorbs what we put on it!

Unfortunately, there's a high chance that what you're putting on your skin contains at least one toxic chemical, if not more. These harmful substances can accumulate over time, potentially leading to various health issues. This is why it's crucial to be vigilant about the ingredients in your skincare products.

When you're in your 40s, it's especially important to avoid as many stressors as possible. This is a critical period for supporting the health of your cells, as well as your overall well-being.

Reducing exposure to harmful chemicals can help maintain your skin’s youthful appearance and prevent long-term damage and even support longevity and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

So let's jump in to answer the question, “What is Clean beauty?” and discuss why women need to use non-toxic beauty products.

What is “Clean Beauty”

What is Clean Beauty Products and Why is it Important?

Clean beauty products are those formulated without harmful chemicals, toxins, and potentially irritating ingredients. The term "clean beauty" encompasses products that are safe for both the user and the environment.

However, don't let marketing lingo trick you! Terms like "organic," "natural," or "green" are keywords to look out for, but it's not always synonymous with non-toxic. These labels can be misleading, as the FDA does not consistently regulate or define them.

This lack of regulation means that products labeled as organic or natural can still contain harmful substances. For instance, a product might be labeled as "natural" but still include synthetic fragrances, which can cause allergic reactions or disrupt hormones. Similarly, "organic" products might contain small amounts of pesticides or other chemicals if not thoroughly vetted.

So, being mindful and informed about the ingredients in your skincare and beauty products is key. It's important to read labels carefully, research unfamiliar ingredients, and choose products from brands that are transparent about their formulations. Clean beauty products prioritize the use of non-toxic, safe ingredients, reducing the risk of adverse health effects and supporting overall well-being, which I'm all here for!

Clean beauty is not just a trend but a movement towards better health and environmental sustainability (because let's face it…society is catching on at just how harmful our environment is becoming - like toxic and fake ingredients, pesticides on everything, chemical on clothing, etc). We are seeing just how impactful these toxins are on our health, with increasing rates of cancer, chronic disease and health issues.

The Issue with Most Beauty Products on the Shelves

Most conventional beauty products contain a cocktail of chemicals that can disrupt your body's natural balance. These toxins can accumulate over time, overwhelming your detox systems and contributing to a range of health issues. The ingredients in many beauty products, ranging from hormone disruptors to carcinogens, pose significant risks.

These toxic ingredients can interfere with the endocrine system, which regulates hormones in the body. Hormone disruptors, such as parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, mimic or block natural hormones, leading to imbalances. These imbalances can cause a variety of symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, weight gain, mood swings, and even certain cancers.

At the cellular level, toxic ingredients can damage cellular structures and functions. For example, carcinogens can lead to mutations in DNA, which may result in uncontrolled cell growth and cancer. Other chemicals can generate oxidative stress, which damages cells and accelerates the aging process. This oxidative stress can also impair the skin's ability to repair itself, leading to premature aging, wrinkles, and a dull complexion.

These toxins can also overwhelm the body's detoxification systems, including the liver and kidneys, making it difficult to eliminate harmful substances efficiently. When the detox systems are overburdened, toxins can accumulate in the body, leading to chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a root cause of many health issues, including autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disorders.

In the skin, these toxic ingredients can contribute to a range of problems. For example, they can disrupt the skin barrier, making it more susceptible to infections and irritations. This can manifest as acne, eczema, and other inflammatory skin conditions. Hormone disruptors can also increase oil production in the skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts.

As a functional nutritional practitioner, I see the impact of these toxins on women's health every week. By choosing clean beauty products, you reduce your exposure to these harmful chemicals, supporting your body's natural detoxification processes and maintaining hormonal balance. This not only helps prevent a host of health issues but also promotes healthier, more radiant skin.

Clean Beauty to Support Detox Systems

Your body's detox systems, including the liver, kidneys, and skin, work tirelessly to eliminate toxins to keep your cells safe. However, when your "toxin bucket" overflows due to a constant influx of harmful chemicals from beauty products that you're slathering on our skin every morning and night, it can lead to a host of issues such as hormonal imbalances, fatigue, and skin problems.

Clean beauty products reduces this toxin load on your body, allowing your detox systems to function optimally. This not only supports your health but also helps you maintain a youthful, radiant appearance because one of the big red flags that you have toxin accumulation and your detox system is overwhelmed is the presence of acne and poor skin!

What is “Clean Beauty”

Clean Beauty and Graceful Aging

Clean beauty products are designed to nourish and protect your skin, helping you age gracefully. They are rich in natural antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that support skin health and combat the signs of aging. Unlike conventional products that can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause irritation, clean beauty products work in harmony with your body's natural processes, promoting a glowing, youthful complexion.

Clean Beauty and Clear Skin

If you have acne in your 40's, this is something to think about! Many conventional acne and skin creams contain harsh chemicals that can make skin issues worse. These products may provide temporary relief, but they often exacerbate the problem in the long run. Clean beauty products, on the other hand, address the root causes of skin issues rather than just masking the symptoms, leading to long-lasting results.

Beyond Clean Beauty

Besides using clean beauty products, you may want to give your body some additional support. To do this, you may need to look deeper into the root causes of skin issues and aging.

If you're dealing with acne or other skin problems, especially in your 40s and 50s, optimizing your skin health often requires a comprehensive approach. This is where functional medicine labs come into play. Through nutrient, stool, and hormone testing, we can identify underlying inflammation and imbalances contributing to poor skin health.

These tests may reveal issues such as dysbiosis, low mineral levels, parasites, and leaky gut that are all leading to those annoying skin issues.
